Ownership

A proper handoff checklist for a web project

Concierge Web Design5 min read

"You own everything" is a nice line until it's time to change agencies and you can't log into your own domain registrar. Here's the list we hand clients at the end of every project — and what to insist on from anyone else you hire.

Credentials

  • Domain registrar login (ideally in your own name)
  • DNS provider login (if different)
  • Hosting account login
  • WordPress / CMS admin account
  • Analytics, Search Console, and any third-party service accounts

Files and code

  • Git repository transferred to your account
  • Design source files (Figma, Sketch, etc.)
  • Final copy document (Google Doc or Word)
  • A short docs file explaining how to update common things

The 'cut ties cleanly' test

The simplest test: if you fired your current provider tomorrow, could you hand everything over to a new one in an afternoon? If not, ask why.
